Actually it wasn't until I went to get my purse out of my bag at the checkout when I realised it wasn't in there. I don't usually check my bag before I go out with it as normally I would have everything in there...

@Ketharaman - it's very easy to realise you don't have your purse for half a day when you drive to work and don't need to pay for anything until lunch. I imagine if based in London, and not Nottingham, this would be a completely different. story.

Hi Melvin, you are actually able to view and print receipts for both Oyster and contactless payment cards on the TfL website, so in this scenario there would be no need for Myson to purchase paper tickets (which would also probably be more expensive than using either an Oyster or conatctless payment card)

I completely agree that it will take a considerable amount of time for contactless transactions to reach anywhere near chip and PIN, my point is that the limit on contactless transactions has meant that consumers are now more likely to use cards (whether contactless or chip and PIN) for lower value payments traditionally made using cash, as they understand it is acceptable to do so.
Without doubt, until all cards issued and acceptance terminals are contactless-enabled, the % of contactless transactions will remain small.

@Andrei - Thank you Andrei - that's very kind of you. I couldn't agree more that it will be a century or so before we see the end of cash.
@Finextramember - I think it's great that some small business owners are moving away from cash and cheques and embracing electronic payments - it makes a lot of sense and is much more convenient for a lot of their customers. I just don't think cash will disappear as quickly as a lot of people are predicting.
Regarding cash on delivery, it's true it's not really taken off in the UK, but it is extremely popular in places such as the Middle East (I am aware my blog is about the UK, I'm just saying that there are places that it is working).
I also agree that a lot of the cash in circulation is probably driven by the black economy.
